2. Dear ozhorses,
A friend of mine suggested that I get my horses teeth checked because he was not gaining any weight despite feeding and worming. Is this a good idea? Hilary Green, NSW

Hilary,
Horses do not gain weight for a number of reasons, however poor teeth is a very common cause for poor condition. Horses teeth are permanently growing and often become sharp on the edges, uneven or do not meet properly, all this leads to poor mastication of their food, which reduces the digestion of the food. Horses do 50% of their digestion in the mouth, so teeth are very important. Find a horse dentist and get him to have a look in side your horse's mouth. Horses teeth should be checked annually.
